WHERE ASIA MEETS EUROPE

The stunning Gergeti Trinity Church

Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan offer a spellbinding array of experiences that span ancient history, stunning scenery, and forays into viticulture and gastronomy. The three countries lend themselves to outdoor pursuits. Scenic highlights of Armenia include Dilijan, a resort town surrounded by forests and alpine meadows, and Haghartsin Monastery, one of the best examples of Armenian medieval architecture. In Georgia, visual splendor is to the fore on the journey along the Georgian Military Highway toward the Caucasus Mountains and the 3300-foot-deep Dariali Gorge. The country is also home to hip hotels like Stamba Hotel and Rooms Kazbegi. In Azerbaijan, Sheki, one of the oldest cities in the country and a key staging point on the Silk Road, is a great place to start an exploration. Its main jewel is the Palace of Sheki Khans, the former summer residence of the royals who were once the most powerful of a series of Khanates in the Caucasus.

SPECTACULAR STANS

An epic drive in Kyrgyzstan

The countries of Central Asia take in everything from ancient Chinese commercial centers and inhospitable deserts, steppes, and mountain ranges to verdant, fertile valleys. Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, two of its highlights, come into their own during summer when the weather awards exploration of their natural wonders. Travel to picturesque landscapes of Song-Kul Lake and Chon-Kemin valley in Kyrgyzstan. Highlights of Tajikistan, meanwhile, include the Wakhan Valley near the Afghan border, peppered with Silk Road forts, Buddhist ruins, and views of the snowbound Hindu Kush, the mountain drive between Dushanbe and Khojand, and the fledging hiking destination of the Fann Mountains.

Suggested Itinerary: Classic Tajikistan or Classic Kyrgyzstan

CRUISE CONTROL

The iconic Tegalalang rice terrace, Bali

Summer is the perfect time for the “Island of the Gods”. Bali is Indonesia’s most amenable enclave, with options for relaxation and pampering that rival anywhere on the planet. Some of our favorite resorts in Asia are located here, like Amankila, Amandari, Capella Ubud, and the new Buahan (main image), where a bold new concept brings guests close to nature with 'no wall' villas secluded among the lush treetops. It also pays to get out on the water and explore the Indonesian archipelago. With over 17,000 islands in total, Indonesia is tailor-made for sea travel. Komodo, in particular, is ideal for summertime. We highly recommend chartering a traditional Indonesian phinisi schooner, although it should be noted that availability is becoming increasingly scarce, so act fast if you're planning to travel this summer.

Suggested Itinerary: Classic Indonesia

STEPPES TO SPLENDOR

The legendary eagle hunters

Few countries in Asia conjure up grand romantic imagery quite like Mongolia. The Central Asian nation, birthplace of warrior and ruler Genghis Khan and one time epicenter of the most extensive land empires in history, is famous for its epic expanses and traditional nomadic culture. A highlight of a trip her is camping in the vast Gobi Desert. The experience does not need to be an ascetic or uncomfortable endeavor. It is quite the opposite when staying at Three Camel Lodge which offers a high-end take on the traditional nomadic lifestyle. Integral to this lifestyle was the Przewalski horse, which once freely roamed the vast Mongolian plains. After becoming extinct in the wild by the end of the 1960s, a successful reintroduction program at Hustai National Park brought back these wild horses to their homeland where you can once again see them roam today.

Suggested Itinerary: Classic Mongolia
