VIETNAM IS OPEN:
HERE IS YOUR GUIDE TO WHERE TO GO

Vietnam is one of Remote Lands’ most popular destinations, as visitors to Asia become more curious in their journeys, seeking a myriad of experiences beyond the ordinary. We are thrilled that it is reopening. As two years have passed since Vietnam closed its borders, we’ve compiled this quick refresher to help reacquaint you with this beautiful country, with some must-see highlights and some lesser-known tips.

Vietnam is open to vaccinated travelers without quarantine from March 15.

VIEW ITINERARIES

THE NORTH

Hanoi is all about culture — stay at the heritage Metropole or the stylish Capella, which opened over the pandemic — and we’ll take you on an expert-guided tour through Vietnam’s art world or introduce you to passed-down family recipes in a cooking class. From Hanoi, explore the beautiful limestone landscapes of Unesco-protected Ninh Binh (main photo), or time your visit to coincide with Mai Chau’s green season for its viridescent rice terraces.

There has been some debate in recent years over whether the iconic-but-popular Ha Long Bay or its quieter sister, Lan Ha Bay, is better. Both are extraordinary, but the enforced absence of visitors has provided a wonderful opportunity to experience Ha Long in 2022 — especially via seaplane without the usual crowds.

The vast undeveloped mountainscapes of the north remain a particular highlight of Vietnam. Head west to the old hill station of Sapa (pictured) to hike some of the most visually stunning trails in Indochina and meet local ethnic minority tribes. Intrepid travelers should turn their attention towards the unfiltered dramatic landscapes of Ha Giang, a spectacular mountain region stretching to the border with China, which takes you back in time.

THE CENTER

The Instagram-famous old port of Hoi An is the star of the show in Central Vietnam, with its pastel-colored shophouses, Unesco Heritage status, and iconic lanterns strung along the canalside streets. This is a wonderful time to experience one of Asia’s most charming old towns without the crowds, as well as underrated Hue, the former imperial seat of the Nguyen dynasty. In a city saturated with history, the Unesco-listed Imperial City — with its stone ramparts and ringed moat — stands apart. Hue is also Vietnam’s culinary capital. Nearby, the ruins of the Kingdom of Champa’s My Son — a contemporary of Angkor Wat and Ayutthaya — complete a triumvirate of Unesco World Heritage sites.

For beaches, Remote Lands suggests the up-and-coming Quy Nhon, where two of our favorite new resorts — Anantara Quy Nhon and Zannier Hotels Bai San Ho — reside. The Anantara even operates a luxurious old fashioned railway journey along the stunning coastline from Danang to Quy Nhon.

THE SOUTH

Saigon is Vietnam at its most energized, where a rebel spirit and modern vitality permeates its mazy streets of crumbling brutalist blocks, ‘60s modernist houses and occasional French colonial edifices. Stay at the ultra-luxe Reverie and spend a couple of days exploring and soaking up the atmosphere. Foodies will enjoy hopping on the back of a Vespa to explore the vibrant street food scene so beloved by Anthony Bourdain, along with the wildly popular craft beer industry here that ranks as among the best in Asia.

Be sure to visit the Mekong Delta — an extraordinary but fragile ecosystem emblematic of rural Indochina. Enjoy a day trip from Saigon on a private speedboat, or spend a night or two at the Azerai Can Tho, among hazy green expanses of coconut and banana plantations, slow-moving backwaters and iconic floating market. Or cruise from Saigon to Phnom Penh in Cambodia aboard the magnificent 20 cabin Aqua Mekong.

Skip Southern Vietnam’s touristy beach towns of Nha Trang and Mui Ne, and instead, head south to the pristine Vinh Hy Bay where Amanoi hugs the craggy coastline of a Unesco Biosphere Reserve — or to tranquil Six Senses Con Dao — an island yet to experience the level of development of Phu Quoc.
