Saigon is Vietnam at its most energized, where a rebel spirit and modern vitality permeates its mazy streets of crumbling brutalist blocks, ‘60s modernist houses and occasional French colonial edifices. Stay at the ultra-luxe Reverie and spend a couple of days exploring and soaking up the atmosphere. Foodies will enjoy hopping on the back of a Vespa to explore the vibrant street food scene so beloved by Anthony Bourdain, along with the wildly popular craft beer industry here that ranks as among the best in Asia.
Be sure to visit the Mekong Delta — an extraordinary but fragile ecosystem emblematic of rural Indochina. Enjoy a day trip from Saigon on a private speedboat, or spend a night or two at the Azerai Can Tho, among hazy green expanses of coconut and banana plantations, slow-moving backwaters and iconic floating market. Or cruise from Saigon to Phnom Penh in Cambodia aboard the magnificent 20 cabin Aqua Mekong.
Skip Southern Vietnam’s touristy beach towns of Nha Trang and Mui Ne, and instead, head south to the pristine Vinh Hy Bay where Amanoi hugs the craggy coastline of a Unesco Biosphere Reserve — or to tranquil Six Senses Con Dao — an island yet to experience the level of development of Phu Quoc.
