Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon (Rangoon) and Pagan's endless thousand-year-old temples stretching as far as the eye can see are two of the great man-made wonders of the world. Most Burmese are Buddhist, although there are over 60 different ethnic groups including the mysterious and intriguing hilltribe people: the Karen, Mien, Hmong, Lahu, Akha and Lisu. Myanmar is very alluring, but it is also a complex and controversial place run by a military junta often called one of the world's most oppressive regimes. Aung San Suu Kyi, the nation's first democratically elected Prime Minister, has been under house arrest since 1989, and many people refuse to visit the country on point of principle. Others argue that the international presence brought by tourism is necessary to improve the political situation. Given the current state of affairs, we advise travelers wishing to visit Myanmar to keep a close eye on developments there, as we do. We love the country and its people, and we do not engage in politics.
