Papua New Guinea (PNG) is largely undeveloped, and is probably the least explored and most rarely visited country in the Asia-Pacific region. This Commonwealth country, which gained independence from Australia in 1975 and whose head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, is among the most intriguing destinations for the intrepid traveler. PNG has over 1,000 different cultural groups, each with its own language, art, music, dance, fashion, weapons and architecture. 96% of the almost six million people are members of a Christian church, although most also practice indigenous animist traditions such as ancestor worship. The majority of the population survives on subsistence-based agriculture, and lives in rural villages with traditional societies. Sea shells were the official currency until 1933, and many of the tribes still use shells, pigs and flightless cassowary birds for dowry money, known as "bride price". PNG is physically spectacular, with lush rainforests, thick jungles, active volcanoes and picturesque mountains (highest peak 14,793 feet).
