Drift Ice Walk

A unique experience available during the winter, it is possible to walk on the drift ice that forms from Russia’s Amur River and gradually covers the Okhotsk Sea each January. 

Ice Breaker Cruise

Board an icebreaker ship and sail along the coastline of Abashiri which is covered in drifting ice each winter. As you sail through the icy sea, observe the drift ice and terrain up-close from the terrace.

Sea Kayaking

Enjoy Shiretoko’s spectacular outdoors via kayak in the Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This gentle experience allows you to paddle along the cliffs where you may see two beautiful waterfalls. In the winter, you may experience paddling in between the drift ice in the sea. 

Shiretoko National Park

This national park is one of Japan’s most beautiful and unspoiled national parks. Located on the peninsula, roads only lead as far as three-quarters in and the northern tip can only be viewed from sightseeing boats or reached on multi-day treks. The peninsula is home to a variety of wildlife including brown bears, deer and foxes. Visitors to the national park can trek along trails to a variety of scenic areas including waterfalls, a viewpoint to observe the wintertime drift ice in the Okhotsk Sea, a majestic rocky mountain surrounded by seagulls, and Shiretoko’s famed five lakes.
