To start your 3-day East Java adventure, we’ll pick you up from your resort in Bali and drive you along Bali’s picturesque west coast to the ferry port in Gilimanuk. From here, you’ll make the 45-minute boat trip across Bali Strait to Ketapang Harbor in Banyuwangi, from which point you’ll be transferred to the inland village of Licin, located in the Ijen Highlands. Here, you’ll check into the Ijen Resort and Villas, located in a lush valley of terraced rice fields and rainforest, offering views of the surrounding volcanic peaks. The resort is ideally situated for hiking to Mount Ijen caldera and exploring the adjacent Ijen National Park.
Get an early start today, with a gourmet breakfast at the resort, then a 4WD journey into the rainforest of the Ijan craters. Along the way, you’ll pass through villages and colonial plantations of coffee and cloves before arriving at the launch point for the day’s hike. The trail to the edge of the crater is a steep 1.9 miles - a challenging climb, but worth the spectacular views at the top. The trail is shared with local mine workers toting sulfur from the crater. After taking in the otherworldly beauty of the sulfurous crater lake, you’ll trek back down and return to the resort, where you’ll have time to refresh before making your way to Malang. It’s a four-hour drive from Ijen Resort to Malang, and you’ll stop for lunch along the way. Malang is a picturesque city with many examples of Dutch colonial architecture - it’s the perfect place to base expeditions to Mount Bromo. Here, you’ll check into the Tugu Malang, a luxurious resort decorated in traditional Indonesian style, featuring Javanese Baba Peranakan antiques and artwork.
You’ll get another early start today as you embark upon a sunrise trip to Mount Bromo, a three-hour drive away. After reaching Tosari, you’ll trek or ride horseback across the black lunar landscape of the Tengger Sand Sea, and ascend a flight of 245 steps to reach the area’s best viewpoint just in time for dawn. It’s a cold and challenging journey, but well worth the effort - from your position, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views over Mount Bromo crater and see Mount Semeru in the distance, an active volcano that regularly emits huge plumes of steam. After enjoying sunrise at this scenic location, return to Malang, where you’ll have free time to explore the city or just relax at your luxury resort. From here, you’ll be transferred to Malang or Surabaya airport in time for your departing flight.
